Washington, D.C. – WTOP takes home five Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards this week from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA).
The WTOP newsroom was recognized as a whole in the Breaking News category for coverage of the Key Bridge Collapse. The WTOP digital team was recognized overall in the Digital category for WTOP.com. Individual awards went to WTOP reporter Matt Kaufax in the Excellence in Sound category for his Capital Goose Control story and also in the Feature Reporting category for his piece, Mullet Madness. WTOP reporter Mike Murillo was also honored in the News Series Category for his series, Long Road Off the Streets, about one D.C. woman’s long struggle to escape homelessness.
“Each day, our team is dedicated to bringing the most up-to-date news to the D.C. area and serving the people in our communities,” said Julia Ziegler, Director of News and Programming at WTOP. “Being honored with five regional Murrow awards is an incredible recognition of that commitment.”
The RTDNA first established the Murrow awards in 1971 to pay tribute to Edward R. Murrow and his many journalism accomplishments. Annually presented by the RTDNA, the Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize outstanding achievements in journalism on the regional and national level.
WTOP now advances to the national round of the competition where it will compete against regional winners from across the country.
